Chem30 – Equilibrium

This page organizes all my Alberta Chemistry 30 equilibrium unit video lessons. The YouTube videos marked “lesson” are complete lessons on the topic. Videos marked “extra practice” are supplemental and best viewed after learning that topic.

Introduction to Equilibrium, the Equilibrium Constant and calculations

Lesson – Intro to equilibrium
Lesson – Equilibrium law expression and calculations (concentrations and Kc)
Lesson – 3 most common types of calculations
Extra Practice – using a variable to solve an equilibrium calculation
Extra Practice – Example solving for the Equilibrium Constant (Kc)

Le Chatelier’s Principle

Lesson/Lab – This video is a Le Chatelier Principle lab. I do this lab before students learn the principle. The lab conclusion is meant to discover the principle.
Lesson – Le Chatelier’s Principle. Learn how concentration, pressure and temperature stress affect a system at equilibrium. Also discussed is when the Equilibrium Constant remains the same or is increased/decreased by the stress.
Lesson – Analyzing time vs concentration graphs. This video reviews how to determine the stress given the changes is concentration post-stress. This skill is always on a chemistry 30 equilibrium test or diploma exam.
Extra Practice – Determine the stress given a time vs concentration graph

Equilibrium and Acids & Bases – Intro (chem 20 review)

Lesson – Review of pH, pOH, [H3O+], [OH-] and introduction of the autoionization of water (Kw)
Lesson – Bronstead/Lowry acids and bases
Lesson – The acid equilibrium Constant (Ka) and base constant (Kb). This topic/calculation will always be on the diploma (likely two questions 1- Ka and 1 – Kb)
Extra Practice – Example: Determining the pH (application of Ka)
Extra Practice – Shortcut method to solving for pH of any acid or base
Extra Practice – Building an acid/base strength table
Extra Practice – Typical calculation (of a base) involving Kb
