This video series covers chemical bonding (ionic and molecular) in Chemistry 20. Only one video covers ionic bonding whereas the rest cover molecular bonding in great detail.
There is one section that covers martial from Advanced Placement Chemistry. These topics are not part of Chemistry 20 for a few bonding concepts highlighted in the AP’s video caption. The Advanced Placement content is intended to be viewed after completing the AP Quantum Mechanics unit.
Introduction to Bonding and Ionic Bonding
Lesson – Introduction to molecular bonding and ionic bonding. This video then goes on to cover ionic bonding in detail including how to predict melting points.
Introduction to Molecular Bonding and Drawings Types
Lesson – Electron dot diagrams of atoms and assembling atoms into molecules using bonding capacity
Lesson – Drawing molecules or molecular ions that don’t obey bonding capacity (5-step method)
Chemistry 20AP content
Lesson – This video goes over formal charges, resonance, incomplete and expanded octets, and coordinative covalent bonding. Regular chemistry 20 students only need to review incomplete and expanded octets. The resonance structures of benzene will be addressed in Chemistry 30.
Lesson – This video reviews the formation of sp, sp2 and sp3 hybridized atomic orbitals to form sigma and pi bonds. This video should be watched after completing the quantum mechanics unit on s, p, d and f orbitals
VSEPR (shape of molecules)
Lesson – Predicting the 3D shape around a central atom (linear, bent, trigonal planar, trigonal pyramidal, or tetrahedral)
Polarity and Intermolecular Forces
Lesson – Predicting the polarity of molecules
Lesson – Intermolecular Forces of molecules (London Dispersion forces, dipole-dipole forces and hydrogen bonding)
Properties of Compounds
Lesson – Properties of compound (Boiling points, melting points and solubility).
