AP Thermodynamics

This unit is an extension of thermodynamics in Chemistry 30 where students learn about enthalpy (H). This unit will introduce entropy (S) and Gibbs free energy (G).

The formulas on the AP Chemistry formula sheet are on the right. The formulas link 3 big ideas from AP:
– thermodynamics (ΔG)
– equilibrium (K)
– electrochemistry (E °)

Introduction to AP Thermodynamics

Lesson – Work, heat, state functions and PV work
Lesson – Internal energy, Enthalpy and determining enthalpy change from bond energies

Entropy

Lesson – Introduction to Entropy (S)
Lesson – Calculating changes in entropy

Minute Physics Video Series

Part 1 – Direction of time
Part 3 – Complexity
Part 4 – How Entropy Powers the Earth
Part 5 – What is the Purpose of Life?

Gibbs Free Energy

Lesson – Standard Gibbs free energy and predicting what temperature ranges make a reaction exergonic or endergonic
Lesson – Using the enthalpy and entropy of reaction to predict if it is spontaneous at a particular temperature
Lesson – Non-standard Gibbs free energy. Linking the initial concentrations (and equilibrium) to the amount of free energy.
