This Advanced Placement (AP) rate of reaction unit does not overlap with Chemistry 30. The prerequisite skills are all learned in Chemistry 20 (in particular writing balanced equations and stoichiometry skills). In this unit, you will learn about first and second-order kinetics.
To the right is the equations given on the AP Chemistry formula sheet. The equations for first and second-order kinetics are provided but not labelled as well as the 1/2 life for first-order kinetics
Introduction to Kinetics and Rate Laws
Lesson – Factors that affect the rate of reaction and rate stoichiometry
Lesson – Rate order
Lesson – Determining rate orders (and laws) for experimental data
1st and 2nd Order Kinetics
Lesson – First-order kinetics, equation/formula with calculation examples. Includes deriving the 1/2 life formula.
Lesson – Second-order kinetics theory, formula, calculations and half-life discussion
CPE Diagrams and Mechanisms
Lesson – Chemical potential energy diagrams as they relate to chemical kinetics. This lesson is more in-depth than is required for Chemistry 30 thermodynamics. However, most of the concepts overlap.
Lesson – Reaction Mechanisms (steps), including comparing fast steps and slow steps. This lesson also includes deriving the rate law when there is a fast equilibrium step in the mechanism.
